This reminds me of Intel's break through in memory where applying stress to Si turned out to increase yield. Of course it was the smart observation that yielded the breakthrough as much as the accidental stress.

Quantumscape's efforts might not work out, but with many companies trying many experiments the mix of design of experiments, theory, and focus is hopeful. Glad they are trying.
