Tesla announced a new EV motor that does not require rare earth elements and reduces the cost of an EV motor by $1000.00. Of course the patent use by Volvo is allowed as Tesla policy is any vendor can use their patents as long as they are reciprocal. I have owned two Tesla cars. For me the experience has been better than my Volvo and Ford Lincoln experience but both of those were ok. Tesla is just better, from my point of view. Glad Volvo is offering more choice. Note that Tesla allowing Ford and GM to use their established network for charging expands the EV market as it reduces consumer fears about battery range.
