My experience with a Tesla — 20,000 miles in 12 months in 2020, only used chargers 7 times, each stop 10 minutes or less. 98% of my energy was home charge just like my cell phone.
I traded in that EV for a Tesla with 350 mile range (with 4 wheel drive). But the big improvement was new faster chargers on the road. A 400 mile trip will only require one stop for a 15 minute charge adding >120 mile range.
I only used chargers away form home 3 times this year, each stop was under 10 minutes with charge rates around 450 miles added per hour.
The average US miles per year is 13,500. Except for long trips, 100% home charging.
The EV battery cost has decline 90% in 10 years. It is on track to support a $25,000 EV price with 250 mile range.
The average price of cars in the USA is $40,000. Tesla low end price is $38,000. Point is EV will make more than 50% of the market happy with a car that is fun to drive, cost less to run and 97% of the time will be charged at home. For trips of 400 miles in a day you will only spend 15 minutes on the road charging.
The article misses real world experience with an EV.
