Folks have been buying ICE cars for years that were or are 50% higher in cost for fuel. 4 wheel drive trucks that never see snow or mud are good examples. Same with SUVs like have at must 2 in the car 100% of the time. Retired folks who drive 8000 miles a year don’t car about cost per mile.
That said Tesla sound system and driving characteristics are great. And the charging infrastructure top of the industry. So yes Tesla will likely be top EV market leader. Just not solely on fuel cost. By the way I own Tesla Stock and a model 3.
I wish folks did buy on efficiency. Some do, most not so much.
safety is another selling point that Tesla leads the market. That could win more sales if Tesla educated the public.
However there is a problem. Minds are hard to change. Read “positioning the battle for the mind”. In short any product cannot easily win the perception already occupied by the competition.
Tesla is known for performance and innovation. Mercedes is known for “luxurious” driving. Volvo for safety. Model S can be better on all points but perception won’t be easily changed.
