First, the joy of ownership is the key. For me, Tesla achieved that result with 350 mile range. This means that for vacation a 400 mile drive requires only 40 minutes of charge. For around town, the home charging takes care of my needs. Note my previous car was a tesla with 250 mile range- in 12 months and 20,000 miles I only used super charge 9 times, for a total of $65.
Second, the development of extremely long life (many charge cycles) may allow home batteries to buy electric power on the grid when power is cheap, sell it back when power is expensive. The implications will be wind and solar returns on investment will more than double. Why should the home owner make this investment? Perhaps just use the EV battery.
