First in past life as product marketing manager I know “If a product is not easy to use it will not be used”.
So for sure the 50% without charging at home need a solution easier then gas vehicles.
Apartments and condos are difficult as how do you know how many plugs to put where. It is not as expensive as you might think. Installing an electrical panel is about $14,000 and can support about 40 EVs for overnight charging. The capital cost will last 50 years or so. Spread over 100 unit apartment over 10 years not a lot, $5/month or so.
But it is a leap of faith that it will be used and when.
And it is possible the local grid is maxed out. Nationwide we the utility companies to publish a plan for say 20% coverage of all apartments by 2030. Where is the low hanging fruit and where must the grid be built up.
As I see it this issue gets little coverage.
Placing fast public charging is easier.
Note for consumers who don’t drive much a fast 10 minute charge every 7 days might be ok. The number of customers often driving 37 miles or less and living in apartments would good to know. The CATL LFP battery aimed at low to medium priced EV offers 250 mile charge in 10 minutes. So we are close for some apartment households if lower cost EVs offer 300 mile range and fast charge and consumers accept 10 minute charge every 7 days.
