First EVs with Toyota acceleration and 2 wheel drive under $25,00 are on the market in China and could be produced today by any vendor. However bAttery production is limited so until manufacturing plants ramp up, the production capacity goes to higher margin more performance cars. However, for light vehicle commercial use the consumer wants the lowest cost of ownership so demand for $25000 good enough vehicles is there. Those commercial use cases are 10% of vehicles and consume 30% of the gas. Also because they are replaced more often the installed base will convert to EV at a fast pace. And those EV have a longer useful life than the gas cars they replace. So the issue is not a can we do it technically but how to deal with the maximum profit goal of corporations? The policy solutions that mandate production of EV vehicles to high use applications are not ideal in terms of free market. Better low cost loans for new production capacity for ideal cost and features aimed at commercial use cases. But yes it won’t happen quickly without policy that force the focus to high use cases.
