“And when money is involved, rational decision-making goes out of the window.”
So true. EV s today, for commercial applications, have lower life time cost. However battery cost is improving about 18% per year. In the U.S. gasoline and diesel consumption is trending to decline by 50% by 2033. The rate of decline will slow for the last 50% as light users of gasoline are less concerned about cost of fuel.
Wind and solar cost declined 90% in 13 years. In China today solar panel cost $012 per watt. With a life of 20 years that is really cheap kWh. Grid investment must be made but the capital investment exceeds a 50 year life. The cost of wind solar and grid storage continues to decline. Coal plants are shut down today before end of life because it is cheaper to buy solar wind and grid storage every 20 years than to ship coal to the plant. The same trend is true for natural gas.
In short, move to EV, wind solar and grid storage save money today. Save even more as engineering investment will continuously improve price and performance.
