An important point. China builds more wind and solar than the rest of the world combined. Why? It is cheaper than coal and gas. So why do they burn so much coal. Easy they can’t build out the grid and add solar and wind fast enough to meet demand. However, my understanding is this year the demand for coal will begin to decline.
Pollution decline is good but lower cost is also good.
Electric power production by coal is also declining in each coal plant. The need to make up for short falls (lack of sun or wind) is the main role of China fossil fuel plants today, to be replaced with short and long term storage asap.
Solar costs $0.12 per watt to build. It lasts for more than 20 years. Per kWh that is really cheap.
The U.S. is trying to encourage domestic production, currently about 3x the cost of China solar panels. My sense is the U.S. should grab the cheap solar now and focus on grid storage as US sourced. Just guessing US build of solar lags China because solar panels in the U.S. are more expensive. Could be wrong as the grid resources have a significant cost.
